Forest Trees

Pottawatomie County RETREET

RETREET is a program operated by Keep America Beautiful (KAB), dedicated to replanting trees in communities impacted by natural disasters. In spring 2025, Pogo will join forces with RETREET to replant trees in areas of Pottawatomie County affected by the April 2023 tornado, at no cost to homeowners.

This project will also provide tree risk assessments and damage removal to households with remaining tree damage, including hanging limbs, branches, and other remaining hazards.

To make this happen, we need your help! If you need a tree or damage removal, are interested in donating, or would like to volunteer, sign up for our interest lists via the forms linked below!

How to Get Involved

April 19 Tornado

On April 19, 2023, an EF-2 tornado struck Pottawatomie County, causing substantial damage to homes, businesses, and the urban canopy. The tornado’s impact zone was 15.5 miles long and 1.3 miles wide, centered along Shawnee’s primary commercial corridor, Kickapoo Avenue. Over 300,000 cubic yards of debris were removed after the storm, and many Shawnee neighborhoods became unrecognizable in the absence of trees.

Pottawatomie County RETREET seeks to reinvest in trees as a public asset, emphasizing the
right tree, right time, right place, right way model.
